Queensland coach Billy Slater has overhauled his State of Origin squad for next week’s crucial second clash against New South Wales, with Reece Walsh earning a surprise recall as the Maroons attempt to keep the series alive.
The Brisbane Broncos fullback returns to the Queensland camp despite a difficult run of club form and was named among a revamped squad following the Maroons’ collapse from a 20-point lead in the series opener. Slater indicated Walsh’s exact role will be determined during the lead-up to the Melbourne showdown but said the dynamic playmaker offers valuable versatility and game-breaking ability.
Several of Queensland’s changes have been forced by injury, most notably the loss of forward Pat Carrigan, who has been ruled out for the remainder of the series with an ankle problem. His absence has opened the door for fresh faces, including Dolphins forward Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, who is in line for an Origin debut after impressive performances at NRL level.
The Maroons head into Game II under significant pressure after surrendering a commanding advantage in Sydney to hand New South Wales the opening victory. With the Blues now one win away from securing the shield, Queensland must respond at the MCG to keep their hopes alive.
Slater defended his selection decisions, stressing that the focus remains on building the strongest possible team rather than dwelling on recent results. He also brushed aside concerns about club rivalries spilling into camp, expressing confidence that key players such as Cameron Munster and Kalyn Ponga will quickly put recent on-field clashes behind them.
Queensland’s preparations begin this week as the Maroons seek to overturn a poor recent record in Melbourne and force the series into a deciding third match.
