Discovering Graz: Austria’s underrated cultural gem

Graz, Austria
Graz. Austria.

Tucked away in the southeast of Austria, Graz offers a compelling mix of old-world charm and contemporary flair.

Often overshadowed by Vienna, Graz quietly delivers one of the most rewarding travel experiences in Central Europe, combining Renaissance streets, cutting-edge architecture, and a relaxed, student-driven atmosphere.

The historic heart that feels alive

At the centre of Graz lies its beautifully preserved Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Narrow cobbled streets wind through pastel-coloured buildings, opening into lively squares filled with cafés and local markets.

The main square, Hauptplatz, is the perfect starting point. From here, you can stroll toward the hilltop Schlossberg, home to the iconic clock tower. The climb, whether on foot or by funicular, is worth it for panoramic views over the city’s red rooftops.

Nearby, Graz Cathedral offers a quieter moment, with its understated Gothic exterior giving way to richly detailed interiors.

Where old meets bold: Modern Graz

Graz isn’t stuck in the past. It is known for its contemporary architecture that contrasts sharply with its historic core.

The standout is the Kunsthaus Graz, often called the “Friendly Alien.” This futuristic art museum hosts changing exhibitions and stands out dramatically against the traditional skyline.

Just across the Mur River, the Murinsel, a floating steel island with a café and amphitheatre, adds another layer of creativity to the city.

A food scene worth travelling for

Graz has earned a reputation as Austria’s culinary capital, thanks to its proximity to fertile farmland and vineyards. The surrounding region of Styria is known for pumpkin seed oil, fresh produce, and crisp white wines.

Farmers’ markets, especially at Kaiser-Josef-Platz, are a highlight, offering a chance to experience local food culture. Traditional dishes like schnitzel pair well with regional wines for an authentic taste of the area.

Easy escapes and outdoor appeal

Graz is also a gateway to the Styrian countryside, making it ideal for travellers who want a mix of city and nature. Rolling hills, vineyards, and hiking trails are all within easy reach.

Within the city, Eggenberg Palace offers expansive gardens and a grand Baroque setting, perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

Why Graz should be on your list

Graz offers culture without overwhelming crowds, innovation without losing its history, and a pace that encourages exploration. Whether you are interested in architecture, food, or discovering a lesser-known destination, Graz provides a rich and memorable travel experience.
