‘If you missed out on the local body elections don’t worry there’s another opportunity to get involved in how things are run in New Zealand,’ said VFF spokesman Tane Webster in a video recently published on social media.
‘The Department of Convservation’s boards applications close at the end of January. There’s approximately 170 positions available across New Zealand.’
‘New Zealand’s Conservation Estate belongs to everyone. Let’s make sure to keep it that way and build the future we want.
‘Applications close at 5pm on 31st January.’

Boards are involved in the review and monitoring of the following statutory plans for their regions:
- Conservation management strategies
- National park management plans, and
- Conservation management plans
There are 15 boards across the country. According to DOC boards are ‘independent bodies that empower local communities and iwi to contribute to the management of conservation areas. Boards provide a voice for local concerns to gain traction in DOC’s work, and on a national level where required.’
Voices For Freedom say the board positions provide an excellent opportunity for everyday Kiwis to get involved in the decision-making process and management of the Conservation Estate. ‘It’s an opportunity for local community concerns to be heard, and an opportunity for you to make a difference at the local level,’ said Webster.
