Albanese reportedly had talks to bring in Indian workers to build a million new homes

In a viral clip on social media, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has confirmed discussions with the Albanese government over a proposal that could see hundreds of thousands of Indian workers brought into Australia to construct a million new homes for incoming migrants.

The revelation adds fuel to Australia’s already heated debate over mass immigration, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faces growing public backlash about the country’s soaring intake. Critics argue the plan highlights a vicious cycle: large-scale migration straining housing supply, followed by further reliance on imported labour to meet the demand.

Australia has seen record levels of net migration since Labor took office, with many voters expressing unease about the pressures on housing, infrastructure, and wages in nationwide demonstrations over the weekend. Polling consistently shows immigration levels are becoming a political flashpoint, with opposition parties and grassroots groups alike warning that the policy risks undermining social cohesion and driving up the cost of living.

For many, the prospect of bringing in foreign workers to solve a housing shortage—created in part by record migration—symbolises a disconnect between government policy and voter sentiment. Detractors say Albanese never campaigned on such a plan before the last election, accusing his government of pushing ahead without a clear public mandate.
