A dinner attended by Australian PM Anthony Albanese and former Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has come under scrutiny following revelations that one of the guests, wealthy businessman Rupinder Brar, was the owner of Barkly International College—a private education provider recently deregistered by Australian authorities.
The event, held on November 12 last year at a Toorak mansion, included several wealthy Indian businessmen. Footage from the dinner has sparked controversy, as attendees were reportedly discussing visas—a sensitive topic amid Australia’s crackdown on fraudulent international education providers.
Barkly International College, which catered primarily to Indian students, was deregistered in May by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) due to “significant noncompliance in relation to training and assessment, enrolment and marketing, and governance systems.” The college has since appealed the decision and launched legal action to overturn its deregistration.
The presence of Albanese and Covid ‘Dictator Dan’ Andrews at the dinner has led to speculation about whether they were compensated for their attendance and whether it was appropriate for them to engage with a multimillionaire education entrepreneur while the Australian government was investigating questionable practices within the international education sector.
The Prime Minister’s Office has reportedly declined to answer questions about the event, adding to the growing concerns over transparency and potential conflicts of interest.
