British broadcasting regulator Ofcom has ruled that U.K. state broadcaster BBC breached its journalistic code after failing to disclose a major conflict of interest in its Gaza documentary How to Survive a Warzone.
The investigation found the film was “materially misleading” because it did not reveal that its young narrator was the 13-year-old son of a senior Hamas official — the group designated a terrorist organisation by the UK, US, and EU.
In its decision released on Friday, Ofcom said the omission could have “eroded audience trust” and constituted “a serious breach of broadcasting rules.” The watchdog ordered the BBC to broadcast a statement detailing the findings during a primetime slot, with the exact timing yet to be confirmed.
The BBC has apologized and accepted the ruling, acknowledging the error. The broadcaster has faced growing scrutiny over its Gaza coverage, with previous controversies including the airing of an anti-Israeli performance at Glastonbury Festival and internal complaints from staff about perceived editorial bias.
The decision marks one of Ofcom’s strongest actions against the public broadcaster in recent years.
