A 56-year-old British holidaymaker has died and another, aged 54, is critically injured after falling around 20 feet when a hotel balcony railing collapsed in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands.
The tragic incident occurred around 1:30am on Saturday local time, prompting an investigation by Spain’s Civil Guard into possible safety or maintenance failings.
Emergency responders confirmed the older man died at the scene, while the survivor remains in intensive care.
The accident has reignited scrutiny over tourist safety in Spanish resorts, where a series of fatal balcony falls — sometimes mockingly referred to as “balconing” — has fuelled both controversy and anti-tourism sentiment.
