Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has secured a majority government after the Liberal Party swept three key byelections, pushing the party past the threshold required to govern outright.
Victories in Scarborough Southwest, University–Rosedale and Terrebonne lifted the Liberals to 174 seats in the House of Commons, comfortably above the 172-seat mark needed for a majority.
The result marks a significant political shift, delivering the Liberals their first majority since 2019. It also represents a rare pathway to majority status, achieved not only through electoral wins but also through a series of floor crossings that bolstered the government’s numbers ahead of the votes.
Carney’s position had already been strengthened after five sitting MPs—mostly from the Conservative caucus—defected to join the Liberals, leaving the party needing just a single byelection win to secure control. Instead, the Liberals claimed all three contests, cementing their dominance and removing any immediate threat to their legislative agenda.
