A video circulating widely online has reignited debate over policing and free speech in the UK, after it showed a man being arrested by multiple officers for allegedly calling someone a “muppet.”
The footage, filmed in a public place, shows at least three police officers surrounding the man. According to the officers, the man’s comment was deemed to cause “public disorder” and “distress” to the person he insulted.
Critics have seized on the video as fresh evidence that the UK is sliding towards a “police state,” where speech is increasingly criminalised under the guise of protecting “public order”. Commentators on social media described the arrest as “beyond parody” and “a dangerous precedent,” with some warning that ordinary citizens could face police action for little more than using playground insults.

Ask for their “constable warrant cards” first, as if they haven’t got them with them they are “acting police officers” and as such cannot arrest you. If they have their “warrant cards” on them, the only thing you say from then on is “no comment”. Give them nothing.
