Veteran Australian businessman Dick Smith has issued an urgent warning that Australia is “doomed” without a population plan to manage surging immigration, accusing political parties of bowing to billionaire interests while ignoring public concern.
His comments follow a Resolve poll showing nearly half of Australians believe permanent migration levels are too high and most think the issue is being handled poorly.
Smith told 2GB radio host Clinton Maynard that the current annual intake of 185,000 migrants will push the nation past 100 million people by the end of the century, straining infrastructure and living standards.
While stressing he “supports immigration”, Smith says the intake should be cut by more than half to 70,000 a year to keep the population at around 30 million, insisting that sustainable growth must be based on efficiency and productivity rather than unchecked population increases.
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Smith said, “Basically, we’re doomed; we’re going to increase our population to staggering numbers,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.
“Jammed into high-rise like China, many very poor and who just live pay packet to pay packet and have no savings at all.
“Mainly capital cities, basically, will be like Shanghai.
“The beautiful houses with a block of land for the kids to play in the front yard and have a cubby house, that will go forever.
“Every house will be knocked down and replaced with high rises.”
