Stacy Wakefield, the widow of the late Major League Baseball star pitcher Tim Wakefield, has passed away, the Boston Red Sox confirmed today.
Her death occurred five months after Tim Wakefield’s untimely death in October 2023.
The Wakefield family released a statement through the Red Sox, expressing their deep sadness over Stacy’s passing at her home in Massachusetts, and of their collective grief at losing both Tim and Stacy in such a short time span.
The family remembered Stacy for her strength, love, thoughtfulness, and kindness.
Both Stacy and Tim Wakefield were diagnosed with cancer, with Tim facing an aggressive form of brain cancer and Stacy battling pancreatic cancer, a fact that was controversially revealed by former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling without their consent in September 2023, just a month before his passing.
‘Tim Wakefield is sick. … Recently, Tim was diagnosed with a very serious, very aggressive form of brain cancer. … The situation in Tim’s case is incredibly serious and he went in and had surgery,’ Schilling said on his podcast. In the same episode he revealed Stacy’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
The Red Sox and the Wakefield family had requested privacy following the revelation of their health struggles.
Tim Wakefield was remembered by MLB at the time of his death for his contributions to baseball, including his unique pitching style with his famous ‘knuckleball’ and his achievements on and off the field.
The pair were married in 2002, leave behind two teenage children, Trevor and Brianna.
