Authorities in Kenya have recovered at least 33 bodies from a mass grave at a church-linked burial site in Kericho, with officials confirming that the majority of the remains were children.
Investigators said the site contained eight adults and 25 children, along with dismembered body parts, with many of the remains found in advanced stages of decomposition. Government pathologist Richard Njoroge reported that several of the children were infants or fetuses, and in some cases their gender could not be identified.
Police are working to determine how the bodies ended up at the cemetery and whether proper legal procedures were followed, amid indications some may have come from a local hospital.
Two individuals, including a public health officer and a cemetery manager, have been detained as inquiries continue, in what marks the latest in a series of mass grave discoveries in the country in recent years.
