Hamas has announced the release of four Israeli soldiers—Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Levy, and Liri Albag—under a ceasefire agreement brokered by the US, Qatar, and Egypt.
In exchange, Israel will free 180 Palestinian prisoners, including individuals convicted of serious offenses. This marks the second hostage-prisoner exchange since the truce began, with 33 hostages set to be released in stages over six weeks, alongside 1,900 Palestinian prisoners.
The ceasefire, implemented after indirect negotiations, aims to halt the conflict that erupted on 7 October 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. The war has devastated Gaza, with more than 47,200 Palestinians reported killed, the majority civilians.
The truce outlines steps toward a permanent resolution, including Israel’s phased withdrawal from Gaza and the return of displaced Palestinians to their homes.
Hamas has pledged to share information on the remaining 91 hostages, though details remain uncertain, particularly regarding the Bibas family, whose youngest member was only 10 months old at capture.
The latest development follows the release of three Israeli hostages last week, providing cautious optimism for families awaiting the return of their loved ones amidst one of the most significant hostage-prisoner exchanges in the region’s recent history.
