Investigators probe Philippines trip by Bondi gunmen

Sajid and Naveed Akram went to Philippines a month before terror attack

Australian and Philippine authorities are investigating a recent trip to the Philippines taken by the two gunmen involved in the deadly Bondi Beach shooting, due to concerns they may have sought militant-style training overseas.

Manila officials have confirmed the men travelled to the country between 1 and 28 November, following reports they visited the Philippines to receive what has been described as “military-style training”.

According to Philippine authorities, Sajid Akram, 50, travelled on an Indian passport, while his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, entered using an Australian passport.

The investigation intensified after Australian police revealed that “homemade” Islamic State flags and improvised explosive devices were discovered in a vehicle used by the terrorists.

The finds have prompted authorities to explore potential extremist motivations and overseas connections.

Philippine National Security Council assistant director general and spokesperson Cornelio Valencia said the council is examining whether the suspects had links to terrorist groups operating in the Philippines and is reviewing their activities while in the country. He confirmed Philippine authorities are working closely with Australian police as the cross-border investigation continues.

    • Can rifles fire blanks and eject spent shell cartridges?

Yes — rifles can fire blanks, but the way they eject depends on the type of blank and the rifle’s mechanism.

      🔎 How Blank Ammunition Works
      – Blank cartridges: Contain powder but no bullet. The case is crimped or sealed with paper/plastic at the tip.
      – Noise & flash: They produce sound and muzzle flash, but no projectile.
      – Case ejection: The rifle still chambers and ejects the cartridge case, just like with live rounds.

      ⚙️ Cycling Differences
      – Gas‑operated rifles (e.g., AR‑15, AK‑47):
      – Blanks don’t generate enough gas pressure to cycle the action normally.
      – A blank‑firing adapter (BFA) is often required — it restricts the muzzle to build pressure so the action cycles and ejects the spent case.
      – Bolt‑action rifles:
      – Will fire blanks and eject cases, but you must manually operate the bolt.
      – Lever‑action or pump rifles:
      – Same principle — blanks fire, but you cycle manually to eject.

      🎭 Common Uses
      – Military training: Simulates live fire without bullets.
      – Film & theatre: Creates realistic sound and case ejection on screen.
      – Ceremonial salutes: Used in honor guards and parades.

So yes — rifles can fire blanks and eject shell cases, but automatic cycling usually requires a blank‑firing adapter to make the mechanism work properly.
