Man to sue Australian TV channel for defamation after being wrongly identified as Sydney mall attacker

Following his wrongful identification as the perpetrator behind the tragic Bondi Junction stabbing that claimed six lives, university student Benjamin Cohen has taken legal action against Channel 7 News.

Cohen has engaged prominent Sydney barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC to represent him along with defamation lawyer Patrick George.

‘We have issued the concerns notice to Channel 7 today,’ George told ABC News.

An investigation by ABC uncovered that the initial misidentification occurred online shortly after the incident on Saturday afternoon.

By early the following morning, Channel 7 News had erroneously named Cohen as the perpetrator, labeling him as the ’40-year-old lone wolf attacker.’

However, NSW Police later identified the actual perpetrator as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, who was fatally shot by an officer inside Bondi Junction Westfield.

Cohen told media he was disappointed with the widespread propagation of misinformation without regard for fact-checking or the real-life consequences.

Channel 7 News have 28 days to respond to the defamation claim.

  1. Everybody in Australia named BENJAMIN COHEN (don’t know how many) could engage in a class action lawsuit! That would be funny.
