A manhunt is underway in Melbourne after an arsonist set fire to the East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation while 20 people, including children, attended a Shabbat dinner inside.
The attacker doused the front door with flammable liquid and fled after igniting it; no injuries were reported as attendees evacuated safely.
The fire, limited to the entrance, is under investigation, with police canvassing CCTV and an arson chemist assessing the scene.
Hours later, a Jewish-owned restaurant was stormed by protesters chanting “death to the IDF,” escalating fears of targeted antisemitic violence.
Community leaders and politicians have condemned the incidents as acts of hate and terrorism.
