Michelle Obama addressed recent divorce rumours in a podcast interview, saying speculation about her marriage arose simply because she chose to skip some public events to prioritise her own well-being.
“They couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself,” she said on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast, pushing back against assumptions that her absence meant marital trouble.
The former first lady explained that society often misinterprets women’s personal decisions, adding, “If it doesn’t fit into the sort of stereotype… it gets labelled as something negative.”
Obama said she’s now focusing on doing what’s best for her, including spending time with friends, choosing her own schedule, and continuing her work on education and her husband’s presidential library.
