New York City Mayor Eric Adams indicted in Federal probe into campaign donations

In a historic first, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted by a grand jury, as sources reveal that federal authorities are investigating possible illegal campaign donations tied to the Turkish government.

The indictment, expected to be unsealed shortly, follows a long-running probe into Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign and its foreign connections.

The mayor is believed to be facing charges related to acting as an unregistered foreign agent after allegedly receiving funds from foreign entities, which may have influenced decisions, such as the approval of the Turkish consulate in Manhattan.

Adams’ campaign and City Hall have been subjected to extensive record subpoenas, involving communications with Turkey and several other foreign nations.

Adams has denied the charges, claiming he is being targeted for his vocal stance on the federal government’s handling of New York’s migrant crisis.

In a defiant statement he promised to fight the allegations and refused to step down. He also expressed frustration with the federal government’s failure to support the city, which has struggled under the strain of the ongoing migrant influx.

Adams has repeatedly criticised President Biden’s immigration policies, suggesting that the legal action against him is politically motivated due to his outspoken views.

The indictment also implicates several of Adams’ top aides and allies, including his former campaign fundraiser Brianna Suggs and Director of Asian Affairs Winnie Greco.

A series of raids earlier this year on Adams’ close associates had already hinted at an escalating corruption investigation.
