Patel threatens deportations over Minnesota fraud

FBI Director Kash Patel has warned that those behind an alleged multimillion-dollar fraud operation in Minnesota could face deportation, after viral online footage reignited scrutiny of large-scale abuse of public funds in the state.

Patel said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had already deployed extra investigators to Minnesota to pursue what he described as systemic fraud against federal programmes, following claims that more than $110 million in state childcare and healthcare funding was siphoned off through sham facilities.

The allegations were sparked by independent YouTuber Nick Shirley, who posted videos showing visits to multiple childcare and healthcare centres that appeared inactive or non-existent, but which had reportedly received large public payments. The footage quickly spread online, prompting criticism of state oversight and renewed pressure on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz over his administration’s handling of fraud risks.

Patel pointed to the earlier ‘Feeding Our Future’ investigation, in which authorities uncovered a $250 million scheme that diverted pandemic-era food aid intended for low-income children. That case resulted in dozens of indictments and convictions and exposed extensive money laundering networks, some linked to Minnesota’s Somali community, the state’s largest immigrant group. Subsequent reports have alleged further fraud across social support programs, with claimed losses reaching into the billions.

According to Patel, suspects in the latest cases are now being referred to immigration authorities for possible denaturalisation and deportation, adding that the earlier prosecutions were “just the tip of a very large iceberg”. He said investigators would continue tracing funds, amid claims that some money was routed overseas through informal networks and may have reached groups such as al-Shabaab.

Walz has pledged tougher enforcement, including jail terms for fraudsters and a statewide prevention initiative using forensic auditors. President Donald Trump, however, accused the governor of incompetence, branding Minnesota under his leadership a centre of large-scale money laundering dominated by criminal networks.
