Firefighters in southern California are battling the rapidly growing Hughes fire, which has consumed 10,000 acres near Castaic Lake, 45 miles north of Los Angeles.
Over 31,000 residents were evacuated as powerful winds and dry conditions exacerbated the blaze, with authorities warning that Thursday poses the greatest danger.
Only 14% of the fire’s perimeter has been contained, and efforts are hampered by high winds of up to 30 mph.
The National Weather Service extended red-flag warnings for Los Angeles and Ventura counties, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to fast-moving fires fuelled by dry vegetation.
While rain is expected this weekend, offering some relief, it also raises concerns about potential mudslides and flooding in fire-damaged areas.
Meanwhile, two smaller fires near San Diego have been mostly contained, but officials emphasize the ongoing challenges posed by California’s year-round fire season.
