A shooting on a school campus in central Sweden has left at least six people injured, with five suffering gunshot wounds.
Four of the victims have undergone surgery, and one remains in critical condition. Among those hospitalised is a person suspected to be the attacker, though authorities warn there may be more injured.
The incident took place at a school for adult students in Örebro, though children’s schools are also located on the premises. Swedish police issued an alert at 13:20 local time (12:20 GMT), initially confirming four people had been shot before later updating the number to five.
As the situation unfolded, students and staff were locked down inside buildings until police determined the threat had been contained and began evacuations.
Maria Pegado, a teacher at Risbergska school, recounted the terrifying moments as shots rang out.
“I threw open the door to my classroom just after lunch break and shouted for everyone to get out,” she told Reuters.
“I took my 15 students and we started running. Then I heard two shots, but we made it out. I saw people dragging the injured—first one, then another. I realized it was very serious.”
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the attack as “a very painful day” for the country.
