Tanzania’s Health Minister, Jenista Mhagama, has refuted a World Health Organization (WHO) report on a suspected Marburg virus outbreak in the Kagera region, stating that all analysed samples tested negative for the ‘Ebola-like virus’.
We “would like to assure the international organisations, including WHO that we shall always keep them up to date with ongoing developments,” she said in a statement.
This follows the WHO’s warning of nine suspected cases, including eight deaths, reported over five days, prompting the deployment of rapid response teams and heightened disease surveillance.
While the WHO cautioned about regional spread risks due to Kagera’s status as a transit hub, Tanzania has reassured international bodies of its strengthened monitoring systems.
