U.S. President Donald Trump has formally called on Israeli President Isaac Herzog to grant a full pardon to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in three ongoing cases.
In a letter released by Herzog’s office, Trump said the prosecution against Netanyahu was “politically motivated” and unjust, praising the Israeli leader as a longtime ally in confronting Iran.
Herzog’s office responded that a pardon could only be requested by Netanyahu or his representatives and cannot be granted while the trial is underway.
Netanyahu, indicted in 2019, has denied all wrongdoing, and his trial—which began in 2020—has been repeatedly delayed.
