At least 91 people, including 13 police officers, have been killed and dozens more injured in Bangladesh amid violent clashes between protesters and police.
Demonstrations erupted in multiple regions, including Dhaka, Bogura, and Rangpur, as tens of thousands took to the streets demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation.
Police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowds, while protesters retaliated by attacking police stations, setting fires, and engaging in running battles. The unrest was sparked by initial student protests against a government job quota system and has escalated into a wider anti-government movement.
The situation remains volatile with a shoot-on-sight curfew imposed, internet access blocked, and over 11,000 arrests made in recent weeks.
Protesters are calling for noncooperation and plan to lay siege to Dhaka, further intensifying the standoff.
Hasina condemned the protests as “acts of sabotage”, attributing the violence to criminals rather than students. Authorities have closed schools, universities, and courts indefinitely, and mobile internet services remain suspended.
Critics accuse the government of using excessive force, while the administration insists it is defending against violent attacks by protesters.
