The White House has ridiculed the BBC after its director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness resigned following a scandal involving a controversial documentary about US President Donald Trump’s role in the 2021 Capitol riots.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted a meme-style “shot/chaser” tweet comparing a headline about Trump “going to war” with the BBC to one announcing the executives’ resignations, highlighting the British state broadcaster’s growing troubles.
Davie offered no detailed explanation for his departure, admitting only that “mistakes were made,” while Turness acknowledged that the continuing controversy around the Panorama programme had damaged the BBC’s reputation. The documentary was accused of misleading viewers by splicing and editing footage from Trump’s January 6 speech, prompting sharp criticism from Washington.
Leavitt has previously branded the BBC a “leftist propaganda machine” and “100 percent fake news.” The British state broadcaster, funded by a compulsory licence fee and government support for its World Service, now faces renewed scrutiny over editorial integrity. UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy thanked Davie for his service but said the BBC must adapt to maintain its “central role” in public life.
The BBC obviously isn’t keeping up with the news – they lost their ““central role” in public life” a long time ago.
