Robyn Malcolm awarded Best Actress Award in France for Kiwi series

New Zealand actress Robyn Malcolm has been honoured with the best actress award at the Séries Mania Film Festival held in Lille, France.

Malcolm received the accolade for her outstanding role in the series After the Party, which she co-developed with Dianne Taylor. The series marked the first occasion a New Zealand production was nominated for an award at the prestigious festival.

Malcolm told State media outlet RNZ that she was elated with the award, reflecting on her decision a decade ago to focus on storytelling within New Zealand, emphasising the significance of her country’s narratives on an international stage.

‘Being in a festival so far from home, you feel the distance. Yet, having our story resonate with mostly French viewers made New Zealand seem incredibly close. It was an extraordinary experience,’ she said.

After the Party dives into the life of Penny, portrayed by Malcolm, who faces disbelief after accusing her husband Phil of a grave offense against a teenager. Judges praised Malcolm and her co-star Peter Mullan for their compelling portrayal, highlighting the series’ exploration of accusation and truth’s burdens.

The recognition has spurred Malcolm to pursue further storytelling opportunities that resonate with diverse audiences. She noted the award as validation of her work’s impact, stating, ‘This recognition proves our story and show made a connection. Now we’re inspired to find more stories that are meaningful to us and our viewers.’
