A 69-year-old New Zealand woman has died in Newport Beach, California, after being run over by robbers fleeing a crime scene.
The incident occurred outside the Fashion Island Mall around 3:30 PM on Tuesday. The attackers, who had just robbed the woman and her husband outside a Barnes & Noble store, fled in a white car and ran over the woman in their haste to escape. As they drove off, the suspects fired shots, causing panic among shoppers and leading police on a high-speed chase across multiple counties.
Newport Beach’s Mayor Will O’Neill expressed outrage and sorrow over the incident, calling it a tragedy that highlights the growing problem of violent crime in communities.
The Newport Beach Fire Department reported that first responders found the woman dead at the scene, while witnesses described a chaotic scene with gunshots and a panicked crowd. The suspects were eventually apprehended after a dramatic chase, with police arresting three men.
