Queenstown Police are continuing their investigation into the theft of several flags set up for the ‘Winter Pride’ event, which were reported missing on Wednesday, 21 August.
Despite significant publicity police have been unable to identify the persons of interest.
A further public appeal was made today by Inspector Paula Enoka as the investigation continues.
Reaction to the incident and allocation of police resources to it has been mixed with organisers calling it “deeply concerning”, while others support their removal.
“Nearly 30 pride flags stolen in Queenstown… A give a little page set up to raise $12k to replace them. Tough choice between that, food banks and helping the homeless.”
Another user expressed disdain for the event, saying it should be banned.
“Queenstown pride event. Ban it!! It’s unfortunate that 12k worth of pride flags have been taken down there. Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.”
Concerns about police priorities were also raised, with a tweet stating, “Police release pics, on the news tonight, of suspects that could be involved in removing pride flags in Queenstown urging the public to come forward… Meanwhile crickets on all the unsolved baby murder cases! Fken ridiculous.”
Lastly, one user argued that the removal of the flags was not motivated by homophobia but by public fatigue: “The removing of the Pride flags in Queenstown is not homophobia or any phobia. Just merely the general public has had enough of LGBT etc being rammed at them… It is having a detrimental effect. Have a party and celebrate but do you have to take everything over?”

When the mainstream media/politics/organizations and corporations tend to ridicule and label as phobic the majority of the country when the even politely disagree with the alphabet mafia what do you expect. Average Joe Public can only be pushed so far. This is a waste of police money and time, maybe we should cut their budget if the have time and money to waste on rubbish like this.
