The Taliban has announced plans to enforce a ban on images of humans and animals in Afghan media, as part of its broader efforts to impose strict Sharia law across Afghanistan.
The group, which initially pledged moderation after retaking control in 2021, has since introduced numerous restrictions, including the removal of women’s images from public spaces and banning “immoral” films and musical instruments.
Saiful Islam Khyber, spokesperson for the Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, confirmed that the ban would be implemented gradually, with a focus on persuading the public that depicting living beings is contrary to Islamic law.
While some regions, such as Kandahar, have already seen restrictions, the law is expected to be applied nationwide. This comes as the Taliban continues to navigate its unrecognised international status while enforcing increasingly strict religious regulations.
