MediaWorks to cut jobs as financial pressures mount

MediaWorks has announced plans to eliminate several roles as part of a company-wide restructure that could impact dozens of staff.

Sources told legacy media that consultations will begin imminently, with some employees given just 72 hours to provide feedback on the proposed changes.

One staff member revealed that the restructure, aimed at addressing financial struggles, would affect various teams, leading to job losses for multiple workers.

A MediaWorks spokesperson explained that the company is attempting to adapt to “market challenges” by reviewing its organisational structure, which could involve disestablishing roles, adjusting reporting lines, and creating new positions.

Despite ongoing concerns about its financial health, including a $107.1 million net loss earlier this year and ongoing low advertising revenues, MediaWorks insists its turnaround strategy remains “on track”. The company has reduced operating expenses, but material uncertainties persist regarding its ability to continue as a viable entity, according to auditors.

  1. The reality is that given the Covid 2019 environment, Media had the platform. It was a golden opportunity to embrace the captive audience. Unfortunately, the crisis was not utilised as an opportunity and instead became a platform for ‘narrative’ to suit a cause. People tuned out, lost confidence and generally no longer appear to trust mainstream Media.
Many young people are simply not interested. They will use alternate mechanisms to keep updated.
Older individuals too are now becoming more remote from the constant stream of bad news and are simply less engaged and appear more focussed on ‘getting on with life’.
We need Media, but it must be balanced in reporting.

  2. This is what happens when you LIE to people. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. TVNZ next. Haven’t watched either since May 2020 when I realised covid was bullshit. Haven’t even turned my tv on, don’t even watch Netflix either haha go woke go broke.
