At least 11 people, including a three-year-old child, were killed and 14 others injured when gunmen stormed an illegal drinking venue in Saulsville township west of Pretoria early Saturday morning.
Police say at least three attackers entered the hostel around 4:30am and opened fire on a group of people drinking, leaving a total of 25 shot, among them a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl.
No arrests have been made and the motive remains unclear, but authorities say unlicensed liquor premises are frequent sites of mass shootings in South Africa, a country already grappling with one of the world’s highest murder rates.
Police warn that innocent bystanders are often caught in the crossfire as violent attacks continue to surge nationwide.
