The US military has carried out a new wave of strikes against Iran, with Washington saying the operation followed attempted attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and American forces in the region.
US Central Command said strikes against Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets began at midday Eastern Time on Tuesday, marking another escalation after US forces recently attacked Iran’s Larak Island and Tehran responded with missiles and drones aimed at American military positions in Jordan.
President Donald Trump described the latest operation as “large and powerful,” saying it was retaliation for an alleged Iranian attempt to mine the Strait of Hormuz and an attack on a US base, while warning that further Iranian retaliation would trigger an even stronger response.
Iranian media reported explosions around the southeastern cities of Konarak and Chabahar, with IRNA citing a local security official as saying four projectiles struck the two areas. Iran’s armed forces and the IRGC have vowed a forceful response, warning Washington it will face “heavy costs” for the attacks. The renewed military action comes alongside increased US economic pressure, including plans for additional secondary sanctions against foreign banks and companies continuing to conduct business with Iran.
