The Government Inquiry into the fatal Tauranga landslides that claimed eight lives earlier this year has been given more time to complete its work, with its final report now due in February 2027.
Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden announced that Cabinet had agreed to extend the reporting deadline from early December 2026 to 18 February 2027 following a request from Inquiry chair Sir Mark O’Regan, a retired Supreme Court judge.
The Inquiry was established after the deadly landslides at Mauao Mount Maunganui and Welcome Bay Road, Pāpāmoa, in January 2026.
Its work includes determining how the landslides occurred and examining whether relevant agencies responded appropriately to apparent risks immediately before the disasters, including whether adequate steps were taken to warn or evacuate people who could have been affected.
The Inquiry is also tasked with identifying lessons that could help reduce the likelihood or consequences of similar disasters in the future.
Van Velden said the additional time would allow the Inquiry to properly consider the findings of the Davison Review, an external investigation commissioned by Tauranga City Council.
Under its terms of reference, the Government Inquiry must have regard to the Davison Review if it is completed before the Inquiry concludes. The council-commissioned review was initially expected by June 30 but was delayed twice before being delivered on August 19.
“This extension will enable the Inquiry to carefully examine the Davison Review findings,” van Velden said.
She acknowledged the later reporting date would be frustrating for families and communities waiting for answers.
“I know any delay will be disappointing for those awaiting its findings. The families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives, and the affected communities will rightly be wanting answers,” she said.
Van Velden said the Government nevertheless wanted the Inquiry to have sufficient time to produce a comprehensive final report.
“That is why the Government has agreed to this extension,” she said.

Identifying lessons that could help reduce the likelihood or consequences of similar disasters in the future means to hire individuals who bring experience, merit and integrity to a job, and sack all parasites who got a job on grounds of nepotism, cronyism, race, connections, referrals, gender, wokeness or frigging blue hair with a nose ring like a sow.

Making it’s first appearance in the polls since re-registration, NZ Loyal received 0.6%, polling ahead of all the minor parties.
“Entering the polls is the first step, as the campaign grows we expect to steadily build on this result, giving voters a viable alternative for New Zealand,” party leader Kelvyn Alp said.
