US border agents now have powers to search travellers’ phones without a warrant or even reasonable suspicion.
A US court ruled Customs and Border Protection can conduct manual searches of electronic devices under the “border search exception,” which has traditionally allowed warrantless searches of people entering the country.
The ruling was the result of a case in which a traveller to the US challenged two warrantless searches of his phone, which produced evidence later used to convict him of fraud.
Privacy advocates warned the decision would open people’s digital lives to government scrutiny simply for crossing the US border.

There is also the option of a kill password that clears your data once entered by the stooges. That said, the best approach is never travel with devices that have confidential data on them (if you can avoid it). Greyzone rocks, one of my favourite sites for genuine investigative journalism.
They are all like this. NZ would, I imagine, be no different. The minute too, you object, they become super suspicious.
Never take electronic devices with personal information and data between nations. I have a travel laptop I use for this very reason. I don’t use mobiles for confidential exchanges so there is no issue as far as they are concerned.
