Former BBC presenter and firefighter Beccy Barr passes away at 46 after cancer battle

Former BBC North West Tonight presenter Beccy Barr, 46, has died following an incurable cancer diagnosis.

Barr, who transitioned from a successful journalism career to become a firefighter in 2019, passed away peacefully at St John’s Hospice in Lancaster. She was known for her warmth, humour, and dedication, inspiring many with her career shift influenced by her father, Roy, who served in the fire service for 20 years. She went public with the diagnosis in early 2023.

Following her passing, tributes poured in from friends, colleagues, and former viewers, celebrating Barr’s legacy as both a journalist and firefighter. BBC Education Correspondent Elaine Dunkley remembered her as “jaw-dropping” in her kindness and fierceness, while Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service honoured her as a “dedicated and courageous” member of their team.
