Undiagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency can have severe, life-altering consequences, including cognitive decline, chronic memory loss, and nerve damage, which may be mistaken for dementia.
UK expert Dr. Edmond Hakimi warns that prolonged deficiency can also lead to persistent numbness, coordination issues, and even permanent vision loss.
Since the body does not naturally produce B12, it must be obtained from dietary sources like meat, fish, dairy, eggs, or fortified cereals. Those following plant-based diets or with digestive disorders face a higher risk and should consider supplementation.
Early detection and treatment are crucial, as long-term deficiency can cause irreversible damage.
“When a B12 deficiency goes undiagnosed for years, the symptoms can become much more severe. Long-term deficiency can lead to chronic memory loss, confusion and cognitive decline, sometimes misdiagnosed as dementia,” said Hakimi.
