Egypt opens Grand Egyptian Museum near pyramids

Egypt has officially opened the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near the Great Pyramid of Giza, hailed as the world’s largest archaeological museum.

Costing $1.2 billion and spanning 500,000 square metres, the GEM houses around 100,000 artefacts covering 7,000 years of history, including the full tomb collection of Pharaoh Tutankhamun displayed together for the first time.

The museum also features monumental displays such as a 16-metre obelisk and an 11-metre statue of Ramesses II, with design elements offering views of the pyramids. Expected to attract up to eight million visitors annually, the GEM is being celebrated as a new cultural landmark and a symbol of Egypt’s growing call for the return of key antiquities like the Rosetta Stone, the Dendera Zodiac, and the Bust of Nefertiti.
