$700K estate forfeited to the State

Wills and testament news

The Government has received nearly $700,000 from the estate of a person who died without a Will — the largest sum of “ownerless property” collected by the Crown in a decade.

Treasury confirmed in documents obtained by legacy media the $685,690 windfall under the bona vacantia provision, which transfers estates with no identifiable heirs to the state.

Public Trust says such cases are extremely rare, with dedicated “heir hunters” working globally to trace relatives before the Crown intervenes.

Around half of New Zealand adults don’t have a Will.
