Todd Gibbons, a 55-year-old convicted child sex offender from Whangārei, had his 12-year prison sentence extended by an additional 10 years after two more victims came forward, bringing his total known victims to four.
His crimes spanned from 1999 to 2009 and involved the rape and sexual abuse of young girls, including a 12-year-old plied with alcohol, a 7-year-old forced to perform sexual acts, and two others aged 5 to 9 subjected to repeated assaults.
Despite the Crown’s push for preventive detention due to Gibbons’ pattern of predatory behaviour and psychological reports indicating an above-average risk of reoffending, Justice Greg Blanchard opted for a finite 10-year sentence, to be served consecutively, citing Gibbons’ age and a counter-report suggesting a lower risk.
Gibbons denied or minimised his actions and blamed his victims. He was added to the child sex offender register.
