The Automobile Association (AA) has voiced serious concerns over Transport Minister Chris Bishop’s proposed GPS-based vehicle tracking system, part of a planned overhaul of road user charges (RUC).
According to the AA’s principal policy advisor Terry Collins, the scheme poses “major privacy concerns” similar to data collection from mobile phones, with unanswered questions about who will access the information and how it will be used.
The advisor also raised issues around cost, asking who would pay for installation and ongoing monitoring. While Bishop has stated the system would only record vehicle distance, critics argue that GPS devices inherently provide real-time location data, enabling far greater surveillance capabilities.

Opponents on social media described the policy as part of a wider “control grid,” warning it could pave the way for restrictions such as “15-minute city” zoning, digital IDs, and even the remote disabling of vehicles. Some suggest mileage could be recorded without GPS by using the existing odometer-based system currently applied to electric and diesel vehicles, which allows drivers to purchase usage credits at petrol stations or online.
The debate comes amid heightened public concern over government access to personal data, with critics accusing the policy of being a step toward centralised tracking of all New Zealand motorists.

I was once an optimistic positive person believing the government had our best interests at heart. After Covid I know we have been living a lie.
As I delve deep down into rabbit holes reading govt documents, companies and charities register etc, I realise we have been set up to be debt slaves with broken families, work till we drop paying taxes and rates to people who produce nothing and have no accountability or anything to show except an inherent inbuilt and entrenched sense of entitlement and lack of respect for the average kiwi.
We are running dual economies in this country, the normal economy and the Maori economy which is largely financed by those of us on the normal economy. The Maori economy is basically a bunch of NGOs and charities funded directly by central government. This week I have gone down a couple of rabbit holes looking at the charities register…..I honestly am gobsmacked…..who audits these charities? The amount of money involved is mind blowing.there are conflicts of interest, people on boards of the charities who are also heavily involved in the MaoriParty, then there’s the housing rabbit hole where the government buys land, helps fund developments in cahoots with private developers, developers go bust, iwi groups receive community housing funding from central govt and then they step in a buy the failed development……see how the scheme works?
