A violent riot has torn through a Dublin suburb after a rejected asylum seeker was accused of raping a 10-year-old girl under state care, igniting fury over Ireland’s immigration and child protection failures.
Thousands of protesters descended on Saggart on Tuesday night, hurling projectiles and fireworks at police and setting at least one Garda van ablaze outside a migrant accommodation facility. Riot police and water cannons were deployed to restore order as clashes escalated.
The alleged assault occurred over the weekend near the former Citywest Hotel, now operating as a permanent shelter for illegal immigrants.
The victim, a 10-year-old girl in state custody, reportedly “absconded from staff during a planned recreational trip” before being attacked, according to the Child and Family Agency (Tusla). Officials said she had been placed in care earlier this year due to “significant behavioural issues.”
The Irish Times reported that the suspect, now in Garda custody, is a rejected asylum seeker who arrived from an African nation about six years ago. Police have 24 hours to charge or release him as investigations continue.

Prime Minister Micheál Martin acknowledged systemic failure, stating, “It is the fundamental duty of the state to protect the children of the state, and irrespective of the complexity or severity of any case, that duty must be fulfilled.”
Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris called the alleged attack “horrifying” but urged the public to remain calm. “It’s important that we establish the facts and allow the agencies to present them,” he said.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan condemned the violence against police. “Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of our democracy. Violence is not,” he said, as Ireland confronts a growing backlash over asylum policies and state accountability in child protection.
