Constitutional law expert Andrew Geddis says the court decision overturning part of Auckland’s local election should force a serious rethink of how New Zealand runs council elections, warning the postal voting system is increasingly indefensible.
Geddis told state media the finding of deliberate ballot manipulation as deeply troubling, saying it strikes at the core of democratic legitimacy. When election outcomes cannot be trusted, he said, the authority of those elected — and the system itself — is fundamentally weakened.
He argued the case exposes a structural weakness in postal voting, which is vulnerable to interference in ways that are difficult to detect or prevent. In his view, the ruling represents yet another blow to confidence in mail-in ballots for local elections.
Geddis said the most secure alternative remains in-person voting, as used in general elections. While acknowledging higher upfront costs, he argued those expenses may ultimately be lower than the financial and democratic cost of rerunning tainted elections.
He said New Zealand may have to “bite the bullet” and invest in a more secure, trustworthy system.
