The FBI has clarified that 274 plainclothes agents were sent to the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, but only after the riot had been declared, to assist with crowd control — a role current FBI Director Kash Patel says went against agency standards.
Patel accused former Director Christopher Wray of misleading Congress by not disclosing the deployment, calling it “the failure of corrupt leadership.”
FBI officials stressed that no agents were present during Donald Trump’s morning speech and none were ordered to incite unrest. Inspector General Michael Horowitz’s 2023 report also found no evidence of undercover employees in the crowd, though 26 paid informants, three of them FBI, were present.
The revelation has reignited political tensions, with Trump blasting Wray on Truth Social, accusing the FBI of secretly embedding agents as agitators and demanding accountability for what he called “Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians.”
Patel, meanwhile, said the bureau is committed to transparency and vowed reforms to prevent evasive testimony.
Officials noted agents arrived at the Capitol from 2:30 p.m. onward at the request of overwhelmed police, and many were uncomfortable being asked to do crowd control — something they are not trained for. The debate highlights lingering distrust over the FBI’s handling of Jan. 6 and raises fresh questions about Wray’s leadership.

January 6 is widely regarded as an attempted insurrection—a violent effort to overturn a democratic election. It exposed vulnerabilities in U.S. institutions and continues to shape political discourse and legal battles.
