Former CIA boss subpoenaed in federal probe into ‘Russiagate hoax’ origins

John Brennan subpoenea news

Former CIA Director John Brennan and several other senior intelligence officials from the Obama administration have been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury investigating the origins of the “Russiagate” allegations, according to US media reports.

The subpoenas, issued by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, reportedly demand emails, text messages, and other communications linked to the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA), which alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and ties to Donald Trump’s campaign. That assessment became central to claims of collusion between Trump and Moscow.

Sources told Fox News and CNN that former FBI officials Peter Strzok and Lisa Page were also served subpoenas, with as many as 30 additional witnesses expected to be contacted. The inquiry, led by US Attorney Jason Reding Quinones, is said to focus on communications from mid-2016 through early 2017.

Earlier this year, the White House ordered a review of the Russiagate episode. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who is overseeing the effort, described the affair as a “treasonous conspiracy” aimed at undermining Trump’s presidency and released declassified documents suggesting a coordinated political effort involving high-level officials.

Some of those documents indicate Brennan briefed President Barack Obama, then-Vice President Joe Biden, and FBI Director James Comey on intelligence suggesting the Clinton campaign sought to “vilify” Trump. Shortly after that briefing, the FBI launched its “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation into alleged Russian links.

Former FBI chief Comey has already been charged with false statements and obstruction of Congress and is due to stand trial in January. Brennan and former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper have not been charged but remain under scrutiny as prosecutors continue gathering evidence.

The Russiagate saga has had lasting political and diplomatic fallout, influencing US-Russia relations and domestic trust in intelligence agencies. Moscow has consistently denied meddling in US elections, while Trump maintains the probe was a politically motivated “hoax” designed to discredit him.
