Christchurch Police mounted a major operation over the past week as gang members travelled into the city for a funeral, resulting in multiple arrests and vehicle seizures.
The operation began on Thursday, 8 January, as gang affiliates started arriving in the region, and concluded on Tuesday, 13 January, once those attending the funeral dispersed.
During the operation police arrested four people, including one individual for breaching gang insignia laws. Other arrests were linked to outstanding warrants and driving-related offences.
Police also impounded a motorcycle and a vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of an air pistol, an air rifle, and associated magazines and ammunition.
Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill said police are continuing to review evidence gathered during the operation to determine whether further offences were committed, including possible breaches of gang-related legislation.
“The public rightly expects that gang members are held accountable for any illegal activity,” Hill said. “Police will continue to take a firm approach to ensure community safety and uphold the law.”
