Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark faces new Code of Conduct complaint

Nobby Clark news

Invercargill Mayor Nobby Clark is facing a new code of conduct complaint lodged by an ‘external party’, as confirmed by the council’s chief executive Michael Day.

This complaint follows a prior one filed by city councillors Ria Bond and Ian Pottinger after Clark’s controversial appearance on Guy Williams’ show, New Zealand Today. Despite criticism for his repeated use of the ‘n-word’, Clark remains unapologetic, defending his actions as a stand against offensive language in various contexts, including rap music and gang names. He views the investigations as unwarranted distractions, emphasising the importance of freedom of expression.

Clark’s controversial stance first emerged last year during an Art Foundation event, where he aimed to highlight tolerance and freedom of expression within the art world.

In his interview with Williams, Clark reiterated his disdain for the n-word while discussing its use in different contexts. Critics, however, including Bond and Pottinger, have labelled his conduct as ‘harmful’ and ‘unbecoming’ of his position. The ongoing investigations aim to determine the validity of these complaints, with Clark withholding further comments until the process concludes, according to a report in state media. Meanwhile, the council has directed all media inquiries to their communications team to manage the influx of queries.

  1. Nobby Clark was elected democratically because people like him and what he stands for, however, there are some in Council who, having nailed their colours to the DEI mast, think they are entitled to undermine a democratic process when it doesn’t go their way. They believe it is democracy when it works for them, and not democracy when it doesn’t.
Local Councils throughout New Zealand are heavy with long time troughers because people can’t be bothered taking the time to watch what councillors are doing, to the point where over half the population don’t even bother voting. They complain about constant rates rises – but they pay them and rarely question where the money is going.
With the bureaucratic army all councils have working for them, I question why, in this day and age of technology, we even need a Mayor and twelve councillors. A CEO (once called the Town Clerk) voted in by the people could take over all the cermonial nonsense carried out by the Mayor, and the hire of properly qualified heads of departments for each bureaucratic arm of the Council should stand responsible for the Works and Services instead of the squabbling jumble of ideological half wits we have now.
