Legacy mainstream media outlet the New Zealand Herald is undergoing a major editorial restructure, cutting around 30 roles, including several high-profile senior journalists who have opted for voluntary redundancy.
Among them are political editor Claire Trevett, investigative journalist Nicholas Jones, and “specialist science reporter” Jamie Morton.
The restructure, aimed at saving $4 million, shifts the newsroom’s focus towards video content, including the launch of a new free, ad-supported streaming channel, ‘Herald NOW’.
NZME CEO Michael Boggs highlighted the company’s strategy to “grow digital audiences” and revenue, despite internal scepticism over losing experienced reporters.
Internal applications for new roles are open until 24 February, with the new structure taking effect in March.
