A South Taranaki man who fatally stabbed his father during a methamphetamine-induced psychotic episode believing he was a “demon” has been sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter.
Basil Thomas Anderson, 36, killed his father, Basil Anderson Sr, 60, in Patea in August 2024 after days of delusional behaviour triggered by meth and cannabis use.
Justice Paul Radich said the pair had been close, but the younger Anderson’s drug use caused a psychotic state in which he imagined his father was controlling his mind. He inflicted 31 injuries, including four stab wounds, one severing the abdominal aorta.
The judge noted Anderson’s remorse and early guilty plea, granting sentencing discounts but emphasised that voluntary drug use could not excuse his actions. Anderson will be eligible for parole after serving two years of his six-year sentence.
