Meta has begun shutting down Facebook, Instagram and Threads accounts belonging to Australian users aged 13 to 15, ahead of the country’s under-16 social media ban taking effect on 10 December.
Around 500,000 accounts are expected to be impacted as Meta moves to comply with a law that threatens fines of up to A$49.5m for platforms that fail to prevent under-16s from using their services.
The company says it will follow a multilayered compliance process but argues a more effective approach would be app-store age verification and parental approval at download, rather than repeated checks across individual platforms.
Affected teens can save their data before deactivation and may request a review if they believe they were misidentified, using a video selfie or government ID to verify their age.
The ban also applies to YouTube, X, TikTok, Snapchat, Reddit, Kick and Twitch.
Critics warn the move risks isolating vulnerable youths and driving them to unregulated online spaces.
With 96% of Australian children aged 10–15 using social media the new law is being closely watched by governments worldwide.
