Myah Leanie Adams, a 27-year-old former Auckland teacher, had her two-year prison sentence for sexual conduct with a 15-year-old student reduced to 10 months of home detention following an appeal in the High Court.
Adams, who admitted to grooming the student via Snapchat, performing sex acts in a car park, and sending explicit photos, pleaded guilty to a charge carrying a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment.
Justice Gerard van Bohemen ruled the original sentence was “manifestly excessive,” granting a higher discount for the impact on Adams’ young child and converting the sentence to home detention, while also lifting her name suppression, citing significant public interest.
Despite her remorse and low risk of reoffending, the judge rejected a lighter community detention sentence and removed conditions barring unsupervised contact with young males and social media access, as well as her sex offender registration, to aid her rehabilitation.

Knowing that somewhere out there a young child is dependent on this selfish and impulsive, “empowered” modern woman is the saddest part of this story.
